I was trained as a General Ophthalmologist, and have always had a special interest in neuro-ophthalmology. Until 2005 I regularly performed a wide range of operations: cataract, glaucoma, lid and squint surgery. In December 2005, following a problem with my arm I decided to discontinue surgical practice. Although retired from full-time NHS practice, I am still actively involved in the diagnosis and management, including pre- and post-operative management of the whole range of ophthalmic conditions Other Activities I was a member of the Ophthalmic Group Committee of the BMA from 1995-2006 as Regional Representative for Mersey. I am a Member of the Executive Committee of the Liverpool Division of the BMA. I served on the Multi-Centre Research Ethics Committee (MREC) for the Northwest, from August 1997 - August 2000. I was a member of the Medical Negligence Expert Panel, St Paul's Insurance Company, 1999-2001 I regularly review papers submitted for publication to the Postgraduate Medical Journal, and occasionally for the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, British Medical Journal and Optometry Today. I am a Member of Council of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists(RCOphth). I also serve as a Member of the College Executive Committee, the Professional Standards Committee (PSC) and the Lay Advisory Group. I represent the College at the National Library for Health I have recently established and chair the Ethics Sub-committee of the RCOphth PSC Lectures I lecture to both lay and professional audiences (both undergraduate and postgraduate) on a range of topics, from medical ethics to neuro-ophthalmology.
